Kings Park

Today some of the children headed to Kings Park to explore. Since it was a rainy day we made sure to dress in head to toe rain gear.

When we arrived we found a picnic table with lots of tree cover to shelter us from the rain. Right away the children excitedly gathered the bug catchers and went frog hunting! Immediately I heard loud voices all over yelling "I found one I found one".

The children quickly started gathering lots of frogs. Every time someone would find one they made sure to tell the rest. They used team work and cooperation to help each other. 

After a while of frog hunting the children found a big puddle...needless to say we did not come home dry! Between the rain, frogs and puddles they kept busy all day! 

The children started getting very curious about the frogs they were finding! 

"Can they swim?"

"What kind of frogs are they?"

"What do they eat?"

With the curiosity lingering some children wanted to know if the frogs could swim. Before putting them in the puddle we had a group discussion, because we did not want to harm the frogs. 

"Frogs have big legs that move out to swim" said a child. Then another children said "the baby frogs are born in water right Mrs. Zilkie?" After much discussion we decide it was safe to carefully place a frog in the puddle. The verdict is....they swim!!!!!

All in all we had a very adventurous day at Kings Park! Some of us even got a little sleepy on the way back. 

Before returning to the park next week we are going to do some research on the frogs we found at the park. We are curious about what kind of frogs they are and what they eat. If there are any frog experts out there we could use your help please share your knowledge. 🐸

Rainy days ☔️

Today we played outside in the misty rain.

 

We did lots of activities to keep us busy. Some of us dug really big holes in the sandbox. They used their big muscles to scoop the sand out with shovels. 

"Look how strong I am, I use my feet to push the sand"

"Look how deep my hole is, I can see the bottom."

One child used an excavator to dig a hole in the sand. 

The girls used their gross motor skills to jump rope. They each had a turn trying to jump over the rope as it was going round and round. Then they decided that was a little tricky so they moved the rope back and forth on the ground like a snake, and one at a time they tried to jump across. 

This child experimented with a ball and a puddle. He made sure no one was close by and then dropped the ball in the puddle. When the ball hit the puddle the muddy water splashed up in the air. 

Rain or shine we encourage the children to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer.

Let us show you the many reasons why....... 

We can relax outside with a good book in our hands.

We like burry our feet in the sand.

We like to slide outside with determination and fearlessness

We love summer because it brings out the explorer in all of us

In summer we shed our layers and let our skin be kissed by the sun

In summer we like to splash and cool off in the water. 

In summer we watch the plants grow and let them surround us with beautiful green life.

In summer the days get much longer and nights are warm.

In summer there is no school,children can relax and be care free.

Summer at Discovery is a time to be one with nature. Fill our days with new nature experiences and unforgettable memories.

Ready set garden!

Summer is here and so is gardening season. This year our goal is to grow enough vegetables to provide snack once a week. So with this in mind we started getting to work in spring. First building some garden boxes. Then starting seeds inside our room.

Fast forward a few weeks later and our vegetables are growing nice and strong thanks to all the rain. It's time to harvest our second crop. Our first was chives and the second is a wild salad mix.

After taking our salad inside we washed and prepared it for a delicious snack to share with our friends.

Kings park July 6 th🐸

Today was our first beyond trip to Kings park. For some of the children it was their first time. For others it was a return to a favourite place. Due to all the recent weather the mosquitos gave us a run for our money. But we didn't let them get us down. 

One of our programs favourite things to do is to find baby frogs on the trail. And to our delight we found some as soon as we started hiking. Our rules for catching the frogs are to be gentle as possible. And once done examining return them to their home. 

Our group was quick and used their eye hand coordination to catch the first ones.

The children soon found out if they worked together one could look out for the frogs, while the others could catch them. That way they could get more.

"Look it I was so quick and I caught one!"

"Here's mine."

"Look he's so tiny."

"He's so darn cute."

Throughout the search there was so much conversation going on. Where did all these frog come from, what do they eat? Where do they live? Why are there so many? Plus many more inquisitive questions.

Half way through we stopped for lunch at a garden labrenth. We did some exploring and even played a game of hide and seek.

The rest of the day was spent exploring and releasing our 75 frogs that we caught!

We can't wait to go back next week to see what awaits us at Kings park.
